Report Details

Nice day on Mile 224. Quiet, only one dog seen, dog appeared to be under control. A few surfers, mostly people walking or standing on the beach. Garnet "sands" very visible. Beach fairly clean, primary component of the drift lines I saw was tree parts, some root systems, twigs, leaves, etc. Also some pieces of wood, but only one piece that I saw might've been tsunami debris. Plastic bits 2nd most common component. Otherwise, clean quiet beach w/fairly heavy surf. Surf sounds almost drowned out the noise of trucks on 101, where 101 runs right along the top of the bluff towards the south end of the mile.Re: height of tide--I actually have NO idea what the tide height was, I guessed. Low tide today was 3.0 at 10:15 am at the OSU Marine Science Center dock. According to my tide table. I wish the report did not ask for a specific number--I'd much rather being able to put in 2 hours after high tide of x'.

Conditions

Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 4.2 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 15. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 12. Surfing: 3. No vehicles on beach on this mile w/out a permit. Two people on the beach, who were packing up & getting ready to leave as I walked by, had a kayak & surfboard, so possible kayaking prior to my arrival. Arrival, about 15 vehicles (viewpoint/Mo's, both lots), departure- 4 parked cars in both lots a few near viewpoint/Mo's.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 15.

Notable Wildlife

None. Saw no birds.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Saw a few Dungeness crab shells.

Driftline Content

Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Small rocks, Wood pieces. Largest component: tree parts: root systems, twigs, leaves, plastic bits, some rope,

Man-made Modifications

none observed

Natural Changes

quite a few small slides of salal, etc. along one bluff, otherwise steady erosion, accentuated by recent heavy rains

Actions & Comments

I was on the beach from 12:10 p.m. to 1 p.m. It was cloudy w/a few drops of rain when I arrived at the Cape Foulweather/Otter Rock access parking lot & stairs. It was sunnier closer to the south end of my mile, near Beverly Beach. The exposed strata of a bluff at the south end of the mile appeared sharply incised (vertically) by the recent hard rains. No slides seen along that bluff, just erosion of the sediments making up the strata. Lots of garnet particles seen, some of the beach near a creek had a strongly pink appearance due to the presence of these particles/garnets. Creeks flowing strongly across the beach.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.

Nice day for a walk on the beach, clean beach, saw 6 cyclists (one solo, I think the rest were more or less together), first time I've seen cyclists on this beach, have seen them off & on from the south jetty north to Lucky Gap access.
