Mile 224 Report
Beverly Beach north, Johnson Creek
April 26, 2016
Pleasant day on the beach.
Report Details
Pleasant day on the beach. Of the 3 dogs, 2 not under good control. One dog ran over & tried to play w/my dog (who was interested in retrieving, not playing), the other dog chased whimbrels, no effort on part of owner to stop the dog. Unusual sighting of whimbrels near the south end of the mile. Also saw crows. Clean beach, w/some large debris tossed way up onto beach in south 1/2 of mile, a tire w/barnacles on it, etc. A long dead seal on beach in north 1/2 of mile. Tide coming in. Tide level is an estimate, high tide of 7.8' at 3:02 pm (at HMSC dock) is the basis of my estimate of 5' tide. I was on the beach from 1:20pm to 2:15pm. Distribution of humans was close to Cape Foulweather access (north end of mile) or Beverly Beach state park (south end of mile). Indications that some entity (state parks?) had been clearing culvert channels, when culverts drained onto beach.
Conditions
Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 5.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 12. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 5. Sitting: 1. Surfing: 6. At the south end of my mile, a woman allowed her dog(and petted the dog when it returned to her) to run 100' or more to chase about 15 whimbrels that were trying to feed.
Concerns
Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs
Vehicles
Notable Wildlife
Whimbrels 15-20.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. I think the bird was a cormorant.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Many of the white "tubes" in driftline--driftlines were usually white because of all the tubes.
Driftline Content
Tubes & usual plastic bits
Natural Changes
Visible retreat of solid bluff. Landslides/major boulder falls
Actions & Comments
No action to take. The large culvert that runs under 101 onto Mile 224 was bulldozed open. The fallen trees & other debris that had slid into the culvert channel have been moved to the north, along the bluff. The bluffs north & south of the culvert continue to erode/slide at a more rapid rate then in the past 4 years or so. I didn't see the equipment but saw some of the marks on the sand left by the equipment. There was a backhoe & another piece of earthmoving equipment near the emergency access at Moolack Beach/shore, and indications (tracks in the sand on the beach at Moolack Shores) that they'd been on the beach, probably clearing the culvert channel near there. Moolack shores isn't part of my mile, might be Mile 223 or 222.

Sunny & warm day, with more people & dogs then I've seen in years on the beach, probably because of the heat wave in PDX, the Willamette Valley & so much of the US. In addition to walking the mile to do a Coastwatch report, I participated in a Surfrider day after the 4th beach trash pickup.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.

Very low tide this am, I have no idea what the exact tide level was so I didn't enter a number.

Nice day for a walk on the beach, clean beach, saw 6 cyclists (one solo, I think the rest were more or less together), first time I've seen cyclists on this beach, have seen them off & on from the south jetty north to Lucky Gap access.
