Shorebird migration in progress with 1000-1200 shorebirds seen feeding on the beach in large flocks at one time. These feeding birds were predominately Western Sandpiper with some Dunlin, and a few Dowichers and Semi-Palmated Plovers. Fly-bys included Whimbrels and Brown Pelicans.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Observed one 2 foot fish, presumably ling cod, washed up on to the beach. Alive but being attacked by gulls.

Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. Unusual amount of plastic pellets. Small amount of weathered kelp.

Another glorious sunny winter day at Heceta Beach! The recent high tides have washed away most of the summer dunes that accumulate on the high beach in front of the vegetation zone. Just another day in paradise!

Took the missus out for a trial walk with her new walking sticks, initially heading north into the wind from Driftwood Shores Resort up to Sutton Creek and return with a nice tailwind.
