Report Details

Beautiful day at the beach. Minimal ocean-borne debris; mostly lots of kelp, crab molt, jellyfish pieces. Just two dead murres, who had died not long ago. Sand volume high (no boat visible), and water levels low (seasonal ponds in dunes non-existent, no water to walk through at all on the way to the beach; Tahkenitch Creek low).

Conditions

Temperature: 63 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: 6.5 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 2. Walking or running: 2.

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 3.

Notable Wildlife

Unusual/cool: As I was walking through the dunes to reach the beach, a CG helicopter flew overhead. Then I heard what I think were coyotes barking and yipping from the dunes. They were probably triggered by the sound. Or...?

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 2. common murres, both. Adults, I think.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells. Unusually high number of jellyfish pieces, both brown and clear. I don't remember seeing that much before.

Actions & Comments

High sand volume; didn't see boat. Saw group of about 200 sanderlings, about two dozen gulls. Great day at the beach; warm, not so windy, with forecast for rain all over Oregon the next day. I was happy to be there.

There is a lot of buzz about whether the stuff on the beaches these days is from the tsunami.

Fair amount of ocean-borne debris, but unlike my last walk here about a month earlier, when the debris was d0ominated by Japanese plastic bottles (tsunami debris?
