Report Details

Mile 128 sits just north of the New Carissa, andher dismantling is clearly visible. It is very interesting to watch. She always seemed huge, but the barge holding the work crew dwarfs her. I was on the lookout for oil globules or slicks, but none seen. In one small section the surf left a somewhat milky residue on the sand. This was no wider than 100ft., then all was clear. The surfwas brown, as it has been all through Spring andinto Summer. The beach was exceptionally cleanof litter, and the high tide is gradually removingthe large clumps of beachgrass deposited over thewinter. So interesting to see large concentrations of finely crushed shells piled so densely that they make one think of Indian middens. A driftwood collector's Paradise! Dunes jagged by winter erosion. Beach grass clumps fallen to beach, much of which has been washed off the beach. Shells, small rocks and one ocean-based debris (nylon rope and orange plastic, both removed). Two sea lions swimming in the surf. Four Turkey Vultures flying above the beach. ATV traffic blessedly light, and Coast Guard air patrol very busy. A beautiful day on Mile 128.

Two sea lions followed along in the surf, interested in my horse. Sea gullsscarce, but had been busy with crabs andsand dollars. Four buzzards cruising, looking for a meal, no luck today.

Driftline Content

Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks. 12 ft. nylon rope/ orange plastic, both removed

Man-made Modifications

Dune modification/removal. Dunes left jagged by winter erosion. Beachgrass clumps fallen to beach. Much of the beachgrass rootmass clumps have washed off the beach.

Natural Changes

Erosion of vegetated foredune. A much different appearance since so many large chunks of beachgrass were undercut by winter waves, and eventually fell to the beach.

Continued high tides, carrying a prodigous amount of sizable timber, have battereed the foredune so badly that it appears sculpted in places.

I learned a good lesson today about MAKING timefor a good report, rather than taking time when I can find it.
