Report Details

A seventy-foot log washed up during the night of 9/05/13 at the junction of miles 236 and 237. It lay parallel to the tideline, and was encrusted with a mollusk that is unfamiliar to me: Pearly gray surface, divided by one dark gray line, and a brilliant orangish-yellow rim around the opening hole.Critters are brown/black. Surf moved the log last night, so that is perpendicular to the tideline today. Mollusks were still alive this morning, though less active. Bird activity (feasting) nonexistent yesterday, very active today. See photos.

Conditions

Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 0.9 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 29. Number of dogs: 7. Walking or running: 16. Playing in surf: 2. Playing in sand: 3. Sitting: 6. Photography: 2. There is a stranded young murre at low tide line. Seems the feet are stuck. I used a stick to move the sand around, and it freed itself, but then stayed put. Not sure what the protocol is, but a lot of people were coming really close to photograph. Tide coming in, so hopefully the bird will float, at least.

Notable Wildlife

Variety of gulls, including a Heerman's? (bright orange beak); crows, feasting on mollusks on a 70' log (see summary)

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Wood pieces.

Storm damage for this mile seems mostly at Laurel/Sijota; Morris Excavation has built a roadbed parallel to the bluff for equipment access; some erosion at World Mark, north of state park.

Remarkably little debris - anticipating a different story after the King tides!
