Mile 168 - Central South Siuslaw Jetty Road - January 11, 2015

Report Details

Overcast and light rain. Very peaceful, except at South end of mile where you could hear the OHV vechicles. Wrack line full of wood and logs, a good bit of human debris. Also found 19 dead birds, per other reports these looked like Cassin's Auklets. Sand smooth from water line to dunes. A few birds working the beach and pelicans air-surfing the waves.

Other Activities: Saw 2 recent sets of tracks person and their dog. Saw one set of tire tracks, possibly a SUV or Truck.

Concerns

Litter

Apparent violations: Lots of plastic and glass bottles, one tire and wheel, one large tangle of thick rope, will come back next week and do some trash pickup.

Notable Wildlife

Saw around 15 gulls, 12 Brown Pelicans air-surfing the waves and around 18 shorebirds (small)

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 19. All looked like murres to me. All but two were missing heads, possible predators?update - 1/19/2015 - Per the "Cassin's Wreck report" Dec 30, 2014, these look like the Cassin's Auklet, not murres, most had the robin egg blue feet.

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Wood pieces. Lots of plastic and glass bottles, also many flat pieces of plastic, one tire/wheel. one large tangle of rope. Wood and logs.

Smooth beach from water to dunes.
