Mile 240 - Taft, Nelscott south, Baldy Creek - November 24, 2013

Report Details

Over the summer, dunes up to 8 ft. high developed at various locations along the mile. The late September Japanese typhoon-spawned storm eroded much of this sand and since that time, gravel beds have been exposed at low tide. Rock hounding is in full bloom, as is surfing and even two kayakers crabbing one day.A house is being built, on concrete pylons, at the foot of SW 35th St, at the level of the parking and steps/beach access. King Tides often splash up these steps.On a few occasions, we found dead birds, which we cannot identify. Most days there were none but when we found them, we found several that day.There has been very little debris this summer, with the exception of the massive net/float ball that washed in on Oct.3.

Since the storm in late September, the summer sand deposits have been drastically eroded and agate-laden gravel is now exposed at low tide so folks are rock hunting daily now.

In the past two months we have found approximately 9 dead birds, which we are unable to identify.

Seaweeds and seagrass, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam.

Actions & Comments

We walk this mile each week and in the past several months have found very little tsunami-type debris, nor tourist-type debris. One afternoon, we found one encrusted wooden pallet and on Oct 3 a massive, fishing net/float ball washed in. It included several types of fishing gear, possibly from many boats. See photo attached.

This was the first sunny and warm day of spring, and lots of visitors filled the beach; almost like a summer day! Significant sand erosion had recently occurred and many logs have been moved higher onto the beach.
