Report Details

This is our first report on mile 234 and we have nothing to historically compare it to.The entire northern portion of the beach was heavily rip-rapped which was in various condition. Beach grasses gained foothold on the rip-rap in several areas. There were several drainage pipes protruding over the rip-rap. The most remarkable discovery was a dead sea lion, about 4 feet in length at the high tide line. The only damage we could see were two small holes on its lower torso about 3 inches on each side of its spine and its eyes had been eaten away.

Temperature: 51 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.2 feet.

Number of people: 12. Number of dogs: 5. Walking or running: 12. Photography: 2. Other Activities: 3 people picking up garbage. Nothing remarkable.

Concerns

Apparent violations: Human feces (with paper) at interface of shore and private property..

Notable Wildlife

Oyster catcher on rocks below bluff.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Small rocks, Wood pieces. 2 plywood panels, red plastic (5' x 7') lid to container, lots of thick dense sea foam.

New Development

Steps down bluff.

Fishing Rock shows significant signs of erosion and natural area disturbance, a great deal of evidence of off-trail usage and climbing on sides which has resulted in increased erosion and death of underbrush. Sparse sea bird presence but heavy wrack line velella velella wash up. No current presence of mammals or seabird carcasses, although there was heavy amount of carcasses this winter especially after storms. Evidence of erosion of slopes adjacent to the beach, especially in proximity to new riprap placement, but also in other areas as well. Light plastic and debris today

Some unattended digging dogs seemed troubling, and one thing to note was a lack of birds.

A large concrete retaining wall collapsed last weekend (~Feb 27) endangering the stability of one home with others also vulnerable to further erosion.
