Report Details

Winter waves have been washing all the way up to the bluffs and vegetation zone. Some damage to stairs and railings. A dead porpoise or dolphin washed in 2/19 and now is mostly just a carcass due to scavengers.  Our debris survey found very little small or mediium debris. However there were 8 lengths of rope and 15 lengths of white plastic strapping material over 2 feet long, much more than normal. Possibly output fom the crab boats that are active off shore.

Conditions

Temperature: 40 F. Cloud Cover: Rain. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SE. Tide Level: 6.0 feet.

Notable Wildlife

Great Blue Heron on beach, flock of sandpipers, few gulls

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 3. Possibly gulls but quite deteriorated

Stranded Marine Mammals

Total stranded mammals: 1. Possibly Pacific Whitesided dolphin, gray on top, distinct dark line down body, white underbelly, or some type of porpoise. Now mostly eaten by scavenging birds.

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). Several days earlier had hundreds of velellas wash in, large in size 3-4 inches. Now the transparent bodies are left in the wrackline

Natural Changes

Erosion of vegetated foredune, Evidence of wave overtopping. Large winter waves have broken up stairs that access beach and undermined concrete ramps
