Report Details

A partially cloudy and cool day. Fewer people and fewer dogs than typical on the beach and in the water. Fewer gulls than I usually see or encounter here. Maybe a total of 12 Gulls in all. Fewer dogs disturbing wildlife than in past observations.

Conditions

Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NE. Tide Level: 2.9 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 15. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 14. Sitting: 1. A positive difference in the dog walkers today. I almost always see dogs disturbing and chasing resting and feeding gulls and other seabirds. Today, the dogs were simply enjoying the walk with their owners. The respect for wildlife was good to see.

Concerns

Litter

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 8.

Notable Wildlife

No truly notable wildlife. Only fewer Gulls than typically here, resting, feeding or in the air. An absence.

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.). Scattered broken pieces of hard plastic.

Natural Changes

I haven't been on this section of beach for awhile, in fact since the last abnormally high tide warning and storm. There may be a new section of erosion with large logs stacked up close to a section of houses. I do not recall it being this way some months back. Photos taken.

Actions & Comments

Plastic and trash collected and disposed of in access parking lot dumpster.  I may or may not...be correct in that there is a newer area of significant erosion up near the houses in one section. I did get photos, but am experiencing difficulty in the attachment of them using this computer. Will try after the report posts to add them from my cell. I am a fairly new volunteer, thus may not be including some details that may be more helpful, nor am I using terminology that I see in some reports of more experienced volunteers. Hopefully I'll get there.

Another glorious sunny winter day at Heceta Beach! The recent high tides have washed away most of the summer dunes that accumulate on the high beach in front of the vegetation zone. Just another day in paradise!

Took the missus out for a trial walk with her new walking sticks, initially heading north into the wind from Driftwood Shores Resort up to Sutton Creek and return with a nice tailwind.
