At this year’s Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME) conference, held in Netarts, the Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition was given the outstanding organization award for leadership in marine and aquatic education. CoastWatch Volunteer Coordinator Jesse Jones accepted the award at the closing ceremony of the conference. Oregon Shores and our CoastWatch Program were honored for our educational efforts throughout the coastal region over many decades.

CoastWatch educates hundreds of volunteers about beach, dune and rocky habitat ecology and ways to engage in conservation activism and community science.  In 2021, CoastWatch coordinated 50 events, including community and citizen science trainings, educational beachwalks, science webinars and teacher trainings. 2022 is proving to be another fulfilling year in shoreline education. As opportunities have opened up with the receding of the pandemic, many of these educational activities are taking place in person on the shore again.

Oregon Shores also provides educational presentations on land use planning and marine conservation.

Previous award winners are:

2018—Haystack Rock Awareness Program
2016—Environmental Science Center
2014—Lester B. Pearson College of the Pacific
2013—Hatfield Marine Science Center (a note from HMSC)
2008—Marine Discovery Tours

Oregon Shores has frequently partnered with NAME over many years, particularly in co-sponsoring the Sharing the Coast Conference. It is an honor to receive this recognition from a partner group.
