Mile 99 Report
Bandon State Park, Devils Kitchen, Haystack Rock
November 23, 2024
Mile 99 shows the impact of the early winter storms and king tides.
Report Details
Mile 99 shows the impact of the early winter storms and king tides. There is little dry sand and some areas with evidence of runoff erosion. Some shore rocks are significantly more exposed due to sand loss. Johnson Creek on the south and Crooked Creek on the north have carved out ankle-deep paths. Johnson Creek is running directly to the ocean (rather than allong the bluff as in past years), sparing the bluff homes from erosion.
Conditions
Temperature: 50 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Tide Level: 3.4 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 13. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 13.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 2. One dead juvenile gull and one northern fumar seen among the debris in the wrack line.
Driftline Content
After the storms and king tides, there was minimal plastic marine debris.
Natural Changes
Erosion of vegetated foredune. There are a few areas of minimal foredune erosion.
