Mile 49 Report
Graveyard Point, Port, Harbor, Battle Rock
May 18, 2025
Cloud cover broke as we were eating lunch prior to going into the beach. On the pocket beach by Battle Rock saw a dead tree looking ready to fall off Battle Rock, almost directly over where the tunnel exits onto that beach.
Report Details
Cloud cover broke as we were eating lunch prior to going into the beach. Not many people around, since it had been raining. Saw fish heads washed ashore, likely from fishermen's discards. Bluff on southeast end of beach has a landslide scar--not sure how old it is, looks fresh-ish. Oddest thing was several snail shells washed ashore, with the snails still intact in them. At least one was still alive. Were they pried from the rocks by humans? On the pocket beach by Battle Rock saw a dead tree looking ready to fall off Battle Rock, almost directly over where the tunnel exits onto that beach.
Conditions
Temperature: 60 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 1.77 feet.
Activities
Number of people: 2. Walking or running: 2.
Other Activities: There was a handful of folks leaving the beach as we arrived, one group with 3 small older dogs, and another couple with one young and active dog that was happily digging holes in the sand, but they were of the beach by the time we went down. The 2 people reported were myself and my sister.. Aside from the digging dog, not much in the way of comment-worthy activity. Though there were several fish heads washed up on the beach. We suspect they were dumped by fishermen on the dock..
Notable Wildlife
There were no birds on the port beach, and no mammals, but we did spot several snails still in their shells on the water line. At least one was still alive. Not sure why they were loose from the rocks. Saw a bird hanging out on Battle Rock on the pocket beach side, looked like a black or pigeon gullimot.
Beached Birds

Stranded Marine Mammals

Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Saw 5-6 fish heads only. Not sure but I think they were some kind of salmon or maybe steelhead. Didn't have the hooked lip of coho, though.

New Development
Nothing observed.
Man-made Modifications
Nothing observed.
Natural Changes
Not sure how old it is, but the bluff above the southeast end of the port beach has a scar from a landslide. Took a photo for comparison against earlier reports, and future. On the pocket beach at the southeast end of the mile, a dead tree is perched on Battle Rock, looking like it could fall at any time. It is almost directly over the exit of the tunnel that goes from Battle Rock Beach to the pocket beach.

Quiet on this beach today. There are always more dead birds here than on the Battle Rock Beach.

Beautiful day! Sunny clear blue skies (Tee shirt weather) about as good as it gets here. Beaches looked clean and in good shape.

The beaches were pretty clean this visit except for an exceptional amount of small trees and branches up with the logs at high tide line. There was no one on the Port Beach but 3 different people used the picnic table at the Sailor memorial while I was there.

The dead jellies were only on the main beach, not the little pocket beach bordering Battle Rock.
