Report Details

A pleasant afternoon at the beginning of the Labor Day weekend. I do not think the three horses made as big of an impact as the three trucks. Neither seemed to have much impact beyond leaving tracks in the sand. Hubbard Creek is sanded in (something I have never seen before), as well as a few of the small creeks emptying on to the beach. Two people were surfing down at Hubbard Creek. I spotted a lizard high in the driftwood. I saw many instances of exposed root, mostly down toward Hubbard Creek. Someone tied a rock up into a tree. A vein of Serpentine rock was very apparent in the lighting today.

Conditions

Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 4.49 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 52. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 29. Sitting: 7. Surfing: 2. Other Activities: 3 people riding horseback. No one seemed to be misusing the beach

Notable Wildlife

Saw one brown pelican in the water having a conference with two cormorants. Also spotted a lizard up in the driftwood.

Beached Birds

Very long dead birds, could be common murres, but not positive.

Driftline Content

Thickness of wrack line varied. Sometimes there would be 3 or 4 piles of bull kelp, but most of the time just a light wrack line.

Report Images

Two of the three horses being ridden on the beach.
The two surfers down at Hubbard Creek.
The tenters are on the other side of Hubbard Creek, which was sanded in.
Hopefully this picture shows how far South Hubbard Creek was sanded in.
I'm not sure why someone would tie a rock up into a tree. A counter balance maybe?? You can see this tree's exposed roots.
More exposed roots resulting a a dead tree.
A vein of Serpentine rock.
One of the small creeks which were also sanded in. This happened down at Hubbard Creek, where as the creeks down by Battle Rock were NOT sanded in.
A beauty shot of the beach. I believe this rock had been known as cabbage rock before it split in two.

I was astounded by the mass of humans on the beach, so I thought I'd report it. Port Orford made plans for beach cleanups of both the dock beach and the Battle Rock beach for July 5th.

Seems like cheating to call this a winter report, with the weather conditions being so lovely.

This was an exceptionally warm Saturday so there were more people on the beach than I usually see but everyone was well behaved and loving the rare chance to be on the beach (and even a few brave souls in the water) without multiple layers of coats.
