Report Details

Beach is mostly clean. Just a trouble spot of trash on the bluff above the mid-mile sea mounts, an area that is already eroding. Erosion of the bluff continues. Sea star colony at the mid-mile sea mounts seems to be making a come back. More stars than I've seen in a long while. Did file a report with Marine. Stream modification below parking lot seems benign.

Conditions

Temperature: 54 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: -0.55 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 17. Number of dogs: 6. Walking or running: 17. Tidepooling: 6. Other Activities: None observed outside listed options. The count does NOT include myself and my sister.. Most everyone we saw were just walking on the beach or poking around in the tide pools visible during the low tide. It had just finished raining as we entered the beach, so we had the place pretty much to ourselves. It wasn't until the way back that we started seeing more people.

Concerns

Climbing bluffs/seastacks

Apparent violations: Signs of someone possibly camping recently at the slide area above the mid-mile point. Trash On a level spot up slope, and driftwood "planks" suggest trying to stabilize slope or create a dry not-muddy path. Investigated object seen at a distance to find trash up the eroding slope. Included a rolled up net that looks like something from sports - maybe a goal net, or something used to practice ball-kicking. Did not have the capacity to remove all of it..

Notable Wildlife

Saw an Oyster-catcher on a sea mount at the mid-mile point. Didn't see a pair, so don't know if it was nesting. Saw perhaps a dozen curlews at the surf line.

Beached Birds

NA

Stranded Marine Mammals

NA

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Saw a few crab casings, but the beach was pretty clean of anything but kelp and driftwood.

Driftline Content

Nothing unusual stands out, except a giant piece of foam in the driftwood stack in the outflow of Hubbard Creek. Has been there since at least November of '24, when my brother noted it. Did spot what looks like an engine, like a 4 cylinder car motor, rusting out on the rocks. Don't know what else it could be. See photo.

New Development

NA

Man-made Modifications

Stream modification. Someone made a "wading pool" out of rocks and driftwood at the stream just below the parking lot. See photo. Doesn't seem to be nefarious, but did require shifting a lot of rocks. Only reported here.

Natural Changes

Several landslides I've noted previously appear to be continuing to slide. A whole section of bluff seems to have lost a row of trees that were still hanging on at my last visit in Spring of '24.

Mile 48

Beach southeast of Battle Rock, north of Hubbard Creek

August 24, 2025

Beautiful day! Sunny blue skies, calm winds and warm (Tee Shirt weather) People and dogs enjoying the day with the weather about as good as it gets here. Beaches looked clean and in good shape. It doesn't get much better than this.

Odd large pieces of trash near Battle Rock. Lots of bottle caps in wrack line. Many small pieces of plastic in the wrack line near Hubbard Creek. I remember my mom showing me an aluminum railing from a shipwreck sticking out of the rocks on this beach years ago when the sand was low.

I was astounded by the mass of humans on the beach, so I thought I'd report it. Port Orford made plans for beach cleanups of both the dock beach and the Battle Rock beach for July 5th.

Seems like cheating to call this a winter report, with the weather conditions being so lovely.
