Report Details

-The dumping of sand/soil over the bluff edge seems wildly wrong. In this same place there are also several large recent tree bases exhibiting that they were pulled from the ground with bulldozers, then rolled from bluff to beach. -The new staircase, being built into mud, will surely not last long. The structure, being built of plastic and treated wood, will be in pieces on the beach soon enough. -buildings moving closer to the bluff edge need to be removed before they also end up on the beach.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate.

Human Activities

Number of people: 4. Number of dogs: 2. A set of tracks, probably atv or the like, on the beach.

Notable Wildlife

Quite a few brown pelicans. More than I’m accustomed to seeing. One dead pinniped, mostly eaten, and accompanying numerous vultures.

Driftline Content

Lots of shrimp molt casings. Removed rope and float from rock in the surf zone.

New Development

Steps down bluff. 1) New steps from bluff top to beach. Made with pressure-treated frame and plastic treads. The associated address is 32782 Gun Club Road Nesika Beach OR 97444 Possible the road is Kilgore, not Gun Vlub. They come together at that point. We know that the owners (“Eden Foundation”) is expressing that they intend to finish improvements to this house and “flip” it. 2) Purposeful dumping very large amounts of soil/sand/concrete pieces from bluff top down to the beach. This address is probably 32956 Nesika Road.

Natural Changes

Of course bluff erosion is a constant in this area. Many homes built long ago too close to the edge are coming closer to being lost every year. There are not as many efforts to “hold back” the land; maybe some folks have given up. We used to see more drain pipes, rock spillover, various types of useless buttressing than I saw this visit.
