Mile 305 Report
Oswald West SP, Cape Falcon N
April 27, 2009
Spent 2.
Report Details
Spent 2.5 hours doing litter pickup. Litter now in Coves 1 and 4 in sturdy bags above the high tide lines and ready for pickup. Will need to wait for another low tide to do this. Probably eight bags of litter, plus a few larger, lighter plastic objects. Three or four large crab traps washed in, but fairly deteriorated -- can't catch or kill sea life. Someone visited since I have been there last and tied a dozen buoys on one of the area access ropes. Also found a piece of metal perhaps 16 inches in diameter with a flange on the outer rim. Possible ancient piece of machinery for logging or quarrying.
Conditions
Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: N. Tide Level: -1.6 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 1. Walking or running: 1. Met one person who was there to gather agates from one of the remote coves. Turns out he is a friend of some of the guys who helped with my 2008 litter removal project from this area.
Vehicles
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. Large concentrations of dead mussels washed up in some of the coves.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Shells, Styrofoam, Wood pieces.
Natural Changes
Landslides/major boulder falls.
Actions & Comments
Not other than to photograph. The two or three VERY large rocks near one of the access points have rolled toward the ocean -- natural erosion process. Glad I was not in the way when they shifted.

In 50 plus years of visiting this small cove, this is the only time I've ever seen it this calm.
