Report Details

There were a great number of people and dogs enjoying the beach this long Thanksgiving weekend. The weather was exceptionally mild, especially after a pretty good storm on Thanksgiving day, and I think people were happy to be out of their houses. The dunes are building up as often happens this time of year. We have had some King tides this past month and there has been some erosion at the base of the dunes.

Conditions

Temperature: 26 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.0 feet.

Activities

Number of people: 61. Number of dogs: 24.

Other Activities: There was a large family (8-9) that were gearing up to do a "polar plunge". Another group of about 10 people with kids were building a beach hut. This was the Saturday after Thanksgiving and the weather was really nice, there were many more people and dogs on the beach than normal for this time of year. Most people had their dogs on leash, I would say about 75%..

Notable Wildlife

I only saw one seagull the whole walk.

Wrackline Content

The tide has been coming in pretty high the past dew weeks and it was very stormy 2 days ago which made the beach pretty clear of debris

Natural Changes

Visible retreat of solid bluff. the dunes are building up. There was some visible erosion at the base of the dunes because of the high tides we have been getting.

The Nehalem Bay State park has partially reopened which has allowed more people to come to the area and stay overnight. It is also summer and we have had exceptionally good weather which brings more people out to enjoy the beach. There are still quite a few logs on the beach from winter storms but many have been washed back out to sea.

I think the amount if debris on the beach is the most noticeable observation that i was able to make.

The beach was clear of most driftwood and the wrack line was very high.

This was my first "intentional" walk on this part of the beach paying close attention to what my mile looked and felt like. I saw about 50 semipalmated sandpipers playing together at the break line. There were many piles of seaweed, a few large jellyfish and lots of slippery jelly fish pieces.

Manzanita's beach was about as devoid of people as it ever gets.
