Report Details

This was my first "intentional" walk on this part of the beach paying close attention to what my mile looked and felt like. About 2/3 of the mile have houses, this is further outside the town of Manzanita. The houses are set back pretty far to protect the dunes and you can't even really see them. There is one area that is cut back much more deeply, there must be runoff at times. There are many big logs stacked up there, after a big storm that will be interesting to note changes. I saw about 50 semipalmated sandpipers playing together at the break line. There were two dead birds, one gull and one crow. There were many piles of seaweed, a few large jellyfish and lots of slippery jelly fish pieces.

Conditions

Temperature: 51 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Tide Level: 9.55 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 9. Number of dogs: 2. I saw 9 people on my 2 mile walk, back and forth on my mile. I saw 2 dogs, both were on leashes.

Concerns

Apparent violations: I didn't see any violations or concerns. One thing that will be interesting will be watching to see how high the sand dunes get. Some of the "sand walls" were over 12 feet high!.

Notable Wildlife

50 semipalmated sandpipers playing together at the break line

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 2. One gull and one crow

A mild and pleasant day on Manzanita’s expansive beach. Photo 1: Runners are backlit by hazy sunshine that accents the shimmering highlights of the wet sand and low waves. Photo 2: This lion’s mane jelly measured 7” across and washed up on the beach without its tentacles but otherwise intact. Photo 3: A tiny uncarved pumpkin at water’s edge brings recent Halloween decorations to mind.

I had the beach practically to myself on this mild day in April with the exception of a family building an elaborate teepee from driftwood.
