January 5, 2025
The beach was clear of most driftwood and the wrack line was very high.
Report Details
The beach was clear of most driftwood and the wrack line was very high. there were very few birds flying about. Quite a few people and dogs out enjoying the mild temperatures, calm winds and no rain!
Conditions
Temperature: 17 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.5 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 31. Number of dogs: 8. Walking or running: 31. Other Activities: There were mostly people walking or jogging on the beach. One family was busy digging and talking,. This was the Sunday after New Years so many visiting folks were taking their last walk on the beach before heading home. There were more people than i expected, although yesterdays weather hadn't allowed any outdoor activity except for the most intrepid beach combers. Nehalem Bay State Park is closed (projected to be closed through June 2025 for renovation and some added campsites0. Normally there would have been at least one or two loops open for the holidays and so there would normally be more people on that end of Manzanita Beach.
Concerns
Notable Wildlife
I saw a couple of sand pipers and only a couple of seagulls.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea). The wrack line was very high on the beach as we have experienced some very high tides in the last few weeks and one fairly major windstorm on Christmas night.
New Development
None noted
Man-made Modifications
None noted
Natural Changes
The sand dune "cliffs" are building a bit because of the high tides. The beach was mostly clear of any driftwood except at the base of the dunes and in the two little stream areas that run to the ocean. Many logs/driftwood tossed in those areas.

This was my first "intentional" walk on this part of the beach paying close attention to what my mile looked and felt like. I saw about 50 semipalmated sandpipers playing together at the break line. There were many piles of seaweed, a few large jellyfish and lots of slippery jelly fish pieces.

A mild and pleasant day on Manzanita’s expansive beach. Photo 1: Runners are backlit by hazy sunshine that accents the shimmering highlights of the wet sand and low waves. Photo 2: This lion’s mane jelly measured 7” across and washed up on the beach without its tentacles but otherwise intact. Photo 3: A tiny uncarved pumpkin at water’s edge brings recent Halloween decorations to mind.

I had the beach practically to myself on this mild day in April with the exception of a family building an elaborate teepee from driftwood.
