Number of people: 17. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 15. Playing in surf: 2. No active beach fires, but several remains of fires that seemed closer to dune face than is allowed. (I think fires are supposed to be closer to the water line.) Did see 2 sets of ATV tracks on beach but no ATVs.

Concerns

Fire

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 1.

Notable Wildlife

One Western seagull was having a rest on a shelf of sand near the water; a few other gulls were flying about and one was dining on a crab. Wrack of most recent high tide contained lots of small piles of various kinds of seaweed. Saw one jelly fish.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 3. Two beautiful big ravens dined enthusiastically on a recently expired bird, perhaps a Northern Fulmar though the neck had been pulled up over the head and the body completely denuded of feathers so it was hard to tell. There were two other birds with COASST tags on them, a Sooty Shearwater and a Western Gull.

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Small rocks, Wood pieces. Beach was very clean; SOLV cleanup was the day before.

Mile 254

Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest

July 28, 2024

It was a beautiful day with many people walking, sitting and playing on the beach. Where the significant erosion of dunes occurred last March, two sets of stairs have been built into and down the face of the dunes. I have pictures of both ladders.

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.
