Mile 254 Report
Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest

Lovely sunny day with a few clouds to make it interesting.
Report Details
Lovely sunny day with a few clouds to make it interesting. Saw full double rainbows! Human Activities: Hardly anyone on the beach. 3 people walking with their dogs. Shoreline/Driftline: The wrack was intermittent and contained all the usual things including lots of plastic. The small pieces, less than 1 inch in greatest dimension, were mostly white or bright blue, a few red and the occasional yellow. One 5 ft long, 8 inch in diameter log appeared to have been in the water a long time and things around it were encrusted with tiny shells. Close to this area I found a white molded plastic dinosaur with articulated limbs, lower jaw and tip of tail; so far I've been unable to find any numbers or other identfying marks on it. Brass screws with triangular heads were used to assemble the toy. Saw several jelly fish washed in and 1 dead Northern Fulmar.
Conditions
Temperature: 41 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 4.0 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 3. Number of dogs: 3. Walking or running: 3. Surprisingly little human activity on the beach considering the tide was going out and the previous day had been very rainy.
Vehicles
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. 1 Northern fulmar, dark morph, not banded.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. Plastic containers from bottles to carboys.
Actions & Comments
Reportedly this month there has been some riprap repair at the south end of the mile, but it was not happening when I walked.

It was a beautiful day with many people walking, sitting and playing on the beach. Where the significant erosion of dunes occurred last March, two sets of stairs have been built into and down the face of the dunes. I have pictures of both ladders.

One cannot help but notice the 120+ large clumps on entangled kelp all along mile 254.

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.
