Report Details

Three new foot paths from dune to beach have been carved out between 'Sisters' and Neskowin Crest. Evidence of waves undercutting dunes at Neskowin Crest at white pole. More evidence of wave action undercutting back by fort and place pole. New roots are exposed at the top of the cliffs at end of Mile 254. In fact, the trail running parallel to the beach is now exposed in some areas.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Moderate.

Human Activities

Number of people: 51.

Stranded Marine Mammals

Total stranded mammals: 1. Dead sea lion at access 39A reported by email to Jim Rice at Oregon State

Driftline Content

Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt). jellyfish

Man-made Modifications

New riprap or shoreline protection structures. Large clump of sand over top of rip rap at Breakers Condos - approximately 40 feet wide. Later I saw two back hoes near the site, so my guess is that Breakers are having rip rap repaired or altered.

Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling. Increased erosion north of 'sisters house' so that metal is exposed quite far inland.

Mile 254

Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest

July 28, 2024

It was a beautiful day with many people walking, sitting and playing on the beach. Where the significant erosion of dunes occurred last March, two sets of stairs have been built into and down the face of the dunes. I have pictures of both ladders.

Mile 254

Kiwanda Beach, Neskowin Crest

June 4, 2023

There is a marked difference between the 1/4 mile of rip rapped beach with its gentle slope and 2' shelf of sand blown against the rocks AND the north 3/4 mile where the dunes are receeding and are eroding in height.

It has been two months since my last observation and, of course, there have been many storms, a great deal of rain and high winds in that time.
