Report Details

It has been a very hard year for Lion's Mane jellies with large numbers of whole or almost whole jellies and pieces, large and small at the tide line. Significant number of other kinds of jellies and pieces as well but the Lion's Mane is overwhelming. Enjoyed meeting a praying mantis and, hopefully assisting in its recovery from the tide. Quieter week after Labor Day but still trash to collect. Concerns about the number of beach fires, at NW 30th, Lincoln City, can count 9 or more fire pits, and over the summer many have been smoldering or actively burning. Tried reporting to park ranger but he was not responsive. People think covering with sand is the right thing to do but Smokey the Bear doesn't live here and the dangers of kids and dogs running over hot sand is real. Perhaps a campaign to educate well intentioned visitors to proper fire management?

Conditions

Temperature: 65 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 1 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 127. Number of dogs: 18. Walking or running: 121. Tidepooling: 6. NW 15th Street access is still closed.

Notable Wildlife

Notable water logged praying mantis at tide line. Picked up and transported to large rocks at the bank and enjoyed watching while it dried and recovered. Took many photos and videos, wished it the best, and left it to what was left of short lifetime.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. It has been a hard summer season on specifically Lion's Mane Jellies. Thousands of whole or almost whole, small to large, and zillions and zillions of pieces on frequent visits all summer. Example photos uploaded but could have been taken almost every day.

Driftline Content

Significant number of pieces of jellies of all kinds, small and large, but predominantly Lion's Mane.
