Report Details

Found two fires left unattended, called the fire station.

Human Activities

Number of people: 60. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 30. Kayaking: 12. Fishing: 12. A second homeless fire was smaller and had consumed the opening of a wooden structure a few days later. I was able to shovel sand onto the worst flames. It rained later that day and finished the job.

Concerns

Fire

Apparent violations: I called 911 for a large driftwood fire that a camper told me was started around dawn by some homeless people who went back up the hill at the south end of Beach Ave and left the fire untended. She was using a stick to keep it from spreading into the pine trees, however the smoke and possible sparks were going up into the trees with a South wind. Her cellphone was dead, so I found a fisherman with one and called. The firemen put it out. It had consumed most of about 3 large logs..

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 2. unknown, pictures attached

Driftline Content

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces. An unusual mammal washed up, pic attached.

Natural Changes

Bedrock uncovered at Inn at Spanish Head.

Actions & Comments

Two fires - one I called the Fire Station as large driftwood logs were on fire close to a hillside with houses above, and the other I kept from growing by pushing sand on the burning small logs and sticks of a driftwood makeshift structure.

This was the first sunny and warm day of spring, and lots of visitors filled the beach; almost like a summer day! Significant sand erosion had recently occurred and many logs have been moved higher onto the beach.
