Report Details
The northern tip of the Salishan Spit has changed quite a bit since our last walk two months ago, no doubt due to the extreme rain, storms and King Tides of the past month. A higher level where much driftwood rested has smoothed out to a gradual incline from the water. A streamlet now runs between the ocean and the Siletz Bay outlet, probably dry at low tide but was beginning to fill in at two hours after low tide. The entire tip, which used to be sandy, has become gravelly. There is a dropoff - about 3 feet - near the "Do Not Disturb the Seals" sign. The seals are GONE! Normally there are as many as 150 at this site. Today - none ... and none in the water.

Not a bad fall day for a walk with our out-of-town visitors, but walking the beach was impossible due to the high tide and big waves, which were reaching the beach grass area and bouncing large pieces of driftwood around.
