Mile 239 Report
Salishan Spit north, Siletz Bay
June 15, 2025
A sunny breezy day.
Report Details
A sunny breezy day. Fun to watch a group of pelicans plunge-diving for fish at the mouth of the Siletz River. Because the edge of their normal resting place at the tip of the Salishan Spit had become so steep, the harbor seal colony split up and took up residence in 2 separate places ... one around the corner from their usual place and the other a sand bar several hundred yards offshore. Total trash collected today: one plastic bottle!
Conditions
Temperature: 54 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate. Tide Level: -0.2 feet.
Activities
Number of people: 18. Walking or running: 15.
Other Activities: Rockhunting. Est. 95 people, 4 dogs on the Taft side of the Siletz River but we did not walk that part.
Notable Wildlife
About 15 brown pelicans plunge-diving near the mouth of the Siletz River. The harbor seal colony was split into 2 groups since their regular resting place had become too steep for them. Estimated 70 seals total.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
A few what I think were pyrosomes on the sand.
Wrackline Content
Wood pieces.

Our mile has become very hard to get to, as most of the beach accesses in the Salishan community have been eroded by a combination of king tides and winter storms.

The marine layer stayed offshore while we were walking our mile so it turned out to be a nice day.

This dispatch covers the entire spit - miles 237, 238, 239 There were no remarkable events: people, nature, trash, marine life It was just a wonderful walk to the tippy end of the spit, where a crowd of lounging dudes greeted us. We walked out three miles on the ocean side and walked back through the neighborhood, which borders the bay side.
