Gleneden Beach, State Wayside
August 8, 2012
Weather has been so calm and warm lots of people are using the beach; evidence of more than 20 campfire sites, all but one completely out (the other had one smoldering piece of wood which I pulled away and doused with wet sand).
Report Details
Weather has been so calm and warm lots of people are using the beach; evidence of more than 20 campfire sites, all but one completely out (the other had one smoldering piece of wood which I pulled away and doused with wet sand). People are doing a good job of cleanup. I found two plastic bottles and two empty Pepsi cans plus a few kids' toys, and they were all at one site. Most obvious was all the balled up kelp and seaweed at driftline. Great gobs of it!

Notable Wildlife
Multiple mounds of balled up kelp as though someone had shot great spitwads from the sky. From a distance they looked like large mole hills. Numerous full crab shells and leg parts, which I don't often see on this beach.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. Not sure of species. White underbelly, black head, black feet with what looked at first like separated toes, but I think there was webbing. Small, maybe 12" in all. Curved downward beak, possibly a small murre?
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
2 jelly fish, orange
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass.

Storm damage for this mile seems mostly at Laurel/Sijota; Morris Excavation has built a roadbed parallel to the bluff for equipment access; some erosion at World Mark, north of state park.
