Mile 226 Report
Otter Crest, State Wayside
December 24, 2025
Mile 226 continues to see very little human activity due to the difficulty of access because of tall basalt cliffs rising directly out of the ocean with few small pocket beaches.
Report Details
Mile 226 continues to see very little human activity due to the difficulty of access because of tall basalt cliffs rising directly out of the ocean with few small pocket beaches. The only human activity observed was two vehicles parked along Otter Crest Loop (old 101) hundreds of feet above the shoreline. And, common activity at Otter Crest State Wayside was very limited due to closure of the building which is undergoing renovation. Wildlife activity was very limited along this mile as it commonly is this time of year.
Conditions
Temperature: 49 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 6 feet.
Activities
Other Activities: Nobody noted at or near the shoreline. (High cliffs line the shoreline and the very few small beaches are difficult to access.). Difficult access, as noted above, greatly limits human access..
Notable Wildlife
No notable wildlife observed.
Wrackline Content
Small rocks. It was not possible to observe the small beach in the mid point of the mile - where high tide doesn't completely inundate the beach - due to the closure of the viewpoint at the Otter Crest State Wayside because of restoration of the Lookout building. Observation of this beach on previous occasions has shown other materials in the wrack line such as wood pieces.
Man-made Modifications
No modifications were observed. This is also a function of the difficulty of access and also the resistance of the shoreline rocks.
Natural Changes
No natural changes observed as basalt cliffs are resistant to erosion and failure.
