Report Details

It was a cool, breezy, and cloudy day. Wave action was fairly significant and large ocean swells could be seen trending out to the horizon. Nobody was noted at or near the shoreline, but there were several vehicles stopped along Otter Crest Loop Road high above the shoreline with occupants generally inside. The Lookout was open at Otter Crest Wayside and three of us had a good visit with the state park ranger inside, where we primarily discussed the gray whales that were not present on this day. Wildlife that was seen on this mile consisted primarily of perhaps ten cormorants and several gulls, primarily on a large triangular rock at about midpoint on mile 226. Little to no change, as is usual, was noted one mile, primarily due to the very resistant basalt making up all of the sea cliffs.

Conditions

Temperature: 53 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 5.6 feet.

Human Activities

Other Activities: None.. No people, thus no activities at or near the shoreline. Several hundred feet above the shoreline, however, there were several people in vehicles along Otter Crest Loop road and a few people and vehicles (one with a bicycle!) at the Lookout at Otter Crest State Wayside.

Concerns

Apparent violations: None..

Notable Wildlife

At about the midpoint of mile 226, on a large triangular offshore rock, there were about ten cormorants and two gulls. Otherwise, only one cormorant and two gulls were seen flying on the mile.

Nothing observed, so no comments on modifications.

Natural Changes

No natural changes noted since the last report three months ago. This is true primarily because of the resistance of the basalt cliffs.

It was a very pleasant sunny day and the ocean was calm, so visibility at and slightly below the surface of the ocean was excellent.
