Mile 224 Report
Beverly Beach north, Johnson Creek
August 7, 2009
A very large number of people at this beach.
Report Details
A very large number of people at this beach. I think many are attracted by the surfing lessons, I have no idea who's offering them. The parking lot closest to the beach steps was almost full, mostly, I think, with surfers/surfer student vehicles. Wouldn't hurt if the instructors: (1) are required to provide life-saving personnel/meet certain standards for provision thereof--as I see no reason why either the Coast Guard or the Fire & Rescue people in Otter Rock/Depoe Bay should have to subsidize a profit making activity like surfing lessons by providing free rescue service if it's needed. (2) pay a fee to state parks--given that they are taking up so many parking spaces. Again, for a profit-making activity. All dogs I saw under reasonably good control, whether on or off leash. I was surprised by how many fire circles I saw along my mile, at least 5-7, stretching from just north of Beverly Beach state park access all the way to the immediately adjacent to the beach steps (north end of mile). There were two fires going while I was walking the mile, one was well away from any vegetation, the other was located almost in the midst of the mass of drift logs near the Alpine Chalet access. The fire circles tend to be loosely clustered (in terms of concentration) near the several access points along this mile, although one was probably close to a 1/3 of a mile from an access. Most were in the sand, near the base of a bluff.I was pleased to see with how free from litter the beach looked, despite what looks like unusually heavy use this summer (lots of footprints). I saw two people w/small dogs on the leash also carrying a plastic bag (shopping bag)--I don't know if they were picking up litter or not. However, I did not see evidence that people were picking up after their dogs (although I didn't see any dog feces either so perhaps I just didn't see it happening).
Conditions
Temperature: 55 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: SW. Tide Level: 6.0 feet.
Activities
Number of people: 75. Number of dogs: 9. Walking or running: 40. Playing in surf: 5. Sitting: 15. Surfing: 10. Kayaking: 5.
Other Activities: Someone's running surfing classes, as I met about 15 or more people climbing up the long flight of steps from the beach to the street when I arrived. Most of them were carrying surfboards. I asked someone if there'd been a competition, she said no, there'd been two surfing classes going on. There were still surfers out, & one kayak (pulled up onto the beach) while I was on the beach. Many many people, I entered 75, my estimate is actually between 70-80. Some were walking north from the Beverly Beach campground but most of them seem to have come from the Alpine Chalets or the beach access (Otter Rock).

While it was cloudy, it was a nice day to walk on the beach, warmish, very little wind & lots to see in the way of erosion, destabilized trees, etc.

There was a minus tide this morning, I have no idea what the exact tide level was when I descended to the beach at 7:31 am. Very foggy, few people, a very enjoyable, close to solitary walk on a foggy beach. My primary observation is that even more erosion, trees gradually slipping, falling down the bluff has occurred.

Sunny & warm day, with more people & dogs then I've seen in years on the beach, probably because of the heat wave in PDX, the Willamette Valley & so much of the US. In addition to walking the mile to do a Coastwatch report, I participated in a Surfrider day after the 4th beach trash pickup.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.
