Report Details

While it was cloudy, it was a nice day to walk on the beach, warmish, very little wind & lots to see in the way of erosion, destabilized trees, etc. I wish I'd had time to walk the entire mile as I wanted to check on the erosion of the beach bluffs on either side of a culvert (whose structure is steadily deteriorating) & how great a volume of water was flowing through the culvert & down the beach to the ocean, see if drift logs had piled up near the culvert (as has sometimes happened in the past, etc). Also observed were what I called "garnet sands" usually seen when some of the lighter (quartz) grains are washed away, leaving heavier chromite, garnet, et al. sand particles.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light.

Activities

Types of Activities: Other - see below.

Other Activities: One person had two tall buckets & was standing near a creek runoff to the ocean, on the gravel bed, no idea what he was doing unless he was looking for some particular shape and/or size of rock.. As noted above, there were very few people on the beach..

Wrackline Content

There was little "wrack". It was obvious that there'd been high tides that went all the way up the beach, plus had washed up against the base of beach bluffs w/enough energy that some grass covered (beach grass of other) humps on the beach had been eroded away. The water had scoured away sand that covered underlying rock & some of that rock (looked like mud/siltstone) had been broken up. I saw a number of rocks, ranging in diameter from approx. 4-5" w/some larger ones scattered on the beach from near the cliff base to where the water began. Usually this is a sandy beach, not mucn in the way of rocks of that size & type, some of the rock was pretty well rounded, some not. But I didn't see much of a "wrack". It's possible if I'd been able to walk further south to one particular part of the beach, I might've seen some. Otherwise, I think the tides have been sufficiently high energy not to leave much in the way of light weight objects for the time being. I did drift logs near a creek /run off to the ocean bed (at/near the beach bluff

Report Images

"Garnet sands" & visible erosion of vegetation covered sand masses.
gradually destabilizing trees, adjacent to trees is some rock/strata scoured by high tides.
Tree that may or may not fall over this winter: note that the top 3rd has a curve & the top is not that far from vertical, indicating tree has been responding to an ongoing long time slide down the bluff

There was a minus tide this morning, I have no idea what the exact tide level was when I descended to the beach at 7:31 am. Very foggy, few people, a very enjoyable, close to solitary walk on a foggy beach. My primary observation is that even more erosion, trees gradually slipping, falling down the bluff has occurred.

Sunny & warm day, with more people & dogs then I've seen in years on the beach, probably because of the heat wave in PDX, the Willamette Valley & so much of the US. In addition to walking the mile to do a Coastwatch report, I participated in a Surfrider day after the 4th beach trash pickup.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.
