I was unable to find what the high & low tide were (allegedly) in Otter Rock on 01/14/2026. The one site I found was, imo, inaccurate. The HMSC tide table indicates low tide was at 3:57 pm & was 0.82'. I have no idea what the temperature was, it seemed fine. The sky didn't stay sunny. By the time I left, there was a mass of clouds moving from offshore/the west, dark gray at the bottom. Didn't seem as if the cloud mass extended all the way to Newport. The clouds w/sun nearby made for a beautiful sky. I enjoyed my walk on this beautiful beach that had so few people on it. I saw the sole surfer come in from the ocean before I left. The people I saw seemed to enjoy the lack of people & barking dogs, etc, as much as I did. Because of my phone's dying battery I wasn't able to photograph continued evidence of erosion, a tree or two that had finally fallen over onto the beach since my last visit, etc. I also saw more driftlogs on the beach then I have in a long time and the logs were spread out over a much larger area then usual. A culvert that goes under 101 (I believe) had a large number of driftlogs etc., piled near its entrance (on the beach side) & forming a delta for 20+ feet in front of it. Even so, water was draining out of the culvert, through the pile of driftlogs & had carved a channel to the ocean.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Moderate.

Activities

Number of people: 7. Number of dogs: 3.

Other Activities: Photographing. Two unleashed dogs, one came running towards me, ignoring a call (faintly heard because of stiff breeze) but when I told it loudly to go away, it did. It must've run 40-50' to get near me..

Notable Wildlife

I usually see few birds on this beach, this time I saw a crow flying overhead, no other birds. I saw a partial skeleton w/some feathers still attached of a gull. I saw few to no dead invertebrates on the beach in the drift lines (I could distinguish 3 lines).

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 1. See above for description, I did not note a leg band.

Wrackline Content

Very thin drift line/mark of tides. Most prevalent was small clumps of sea grass. Saw very little trash

Man-made Modifications

Near the condos (now short term rentals) at the south edge of Otter Rock, is an older house that's undergoing a remodel that will extend the house & a deck much closer to the edge of the bluff. Probably legal.

Natural Changes

Near the south border of my mile (near Beverly Beach state park) is a bluff that has clear strata, i.e, layers of poorly consolidated sandstone, etc ,of different colors (or light sand & darker tan strata). On this visit I saw more differential block movement, i.e, that a few small blocks had dropped more then most of the bluff. This bluff has steadly eroded, made obvious by the decrease in pines on the top of the bluff. Twenty years ago, it was a fairly big grove or mass of tall coast pines, that stood out because of the way the tops of the trees had been shaped by coast winds, so that the top line of the trees formed a wind-created slope. That's pretty much disappeared because so many trees have disappeare due to erosion of the bluff, by wind, rain, storm surges, etc. I've taken many photos of this bluff over a number of years, I couldn't take any photos of the shifting blocks because my phone battery was pretty much dead.

Report Images

Tree(s) fallen onto the beach since my last visit (I think). Only photo I took.

While it was cloudy, it was a nice day to walk on the beach, warmish, very little wind & lots to see in the way of erosion, destabilized trees, etc.

There was a minus tide this morning, I have no idea what the exact tide level was when I descended to the beach at 7:31 am. Very foggy, few people, a very enjoyable, close to solitary walk on a foggy beach. My primary observation is that even more erosion, trees gradually slipping, falling down the bluff has occurred.

Sunny & warm day, with more people & dogs then I've seen in years on the beach, probably because of the heat wave in PDX, the Willamette Valley & so much of the US. In addition to walking the mile to do a Coastwatch report, I participated in a Surfrider day after the 4th beach trash pickup.

Low tide at Yaquina Bay was listed as 12:16 pm today, the north jetty & a headland, and probably about 8-10 miles separate YB from the beach at Otter Rock where my mile is located, I don't know how much those factors change (or not) the exact tide level when I stepped onto the beach this morning OR when I left, about noon. Overall a beautiful day on the beach, on my arrival there were probably 23 people (including surfers) on the beach, that number increased to the number I entered.
