Report Details

I stated the cloud cover was fog, but it was very light with the sun mostly visible, and blue sky to the east! There was more contour to the sand than in last couple of months, probably due to the high winds of this past week. A lot of human-made driftwood structures and "rock people" were present. Very little debris/trash, 3-4 plastic bottles and a few styrofoam pieces. There was new graffiti carved into a sandstone boulder (a family name). The sea lion carcass is now mostly sunken and covered by sand, but still discernable if you know it's there.

Conditions

Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Foggy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Wind Direction: NW. Tide Level: 6.0 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 28. Number of dogs: 2. Walking or running: 24. Playing in sand: 2. Sitting: 2. I park in the area just north of the Motel, so I presume most of the people on the beach were using the designated Moolack parking area further north. The descent to the beach is easier on the one I use.

Concerns

Disturbances: Shorebirds moving in response to humans/dogs

Vehicles

Cars/trucks parking: 2.

Notable Wildlife

Large flock of western gulls at Moolack creek outlet; a few crows and turkey vultures; flock (fleet?) of unspecified cormorants floating just offshore; small flock of unspecified small shorebirds.

Beached Birds

Total dead birds: 3. Western gulls (including one juvenile)

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells, Small rocks. wood and a few pieces of styrofoam higher above driftline.

Natural Changes

Landslides/major boulder falls.

Actions & Comments

minor landslide near north end of Moolack parking area. I am realizing the need to make a set of "baseline" photos of the areas subject to erosion and slides. Will do this before next report.

The beach fire close to vegetation, and somewhat close to access point was the main unusual concern to report, otherwise just the usual concern of trash.

Notable highlights: relatively small landslide at the mile's middle parking lot; large piece of shipping debris; large tree debris (unusual to see large natural or unnatural debris at this mile; the usual trash (though as usual, less than seen at miles 223 and 224 to the north); a bald eagle and barn swallows!
