Mile 213 Report
Henderson Creek, South Beach SP south
October 5, 2024
Sunny day except in an area of the Southshore neighborhood, where fog kept it cool.
Report Details
Sunny day except in an area of the Southshore neighborhood, where fog kept it cool. Wind was stronger, too. I'm used to many pebbles exposed in low tide, but not many were seen today. Gulls sitting on the sand facing east, probably for the sun. A new sight for me.
Conditions
Temperature: 61 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.4 feet.
Human Activities
Number of people: 13. Walking or running: 13. Other Activities: 2 horses with riders. 3 cars in parking lot at Surfland beach access
Notable Wildlife
15 birds, mostly gulls sitting on the beach facing the eastern sun for probably warmth. Haven't seen this before.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. Lots of kelp this time -- in masses or separately. Haven't seen this before. Mostly south of Henderson Creek to Surfland beach access.
Driftline Content
Wood pieces. Wood pieces were tossed upon the top of the bluffs where the houses are. Haven't seen that before. Usually found below the bluffs.
Natural Changes
Evidence of wave overtopping. Large wood pieces on top of bluffs. foredumes seem to be missing in areas and now flattened with vegetation now on beach. Looked like what one would expect after winter storms but too early for them. Will be interesting to see what these areas look like next year after the winter storms.

This time I concentrated on the area south of Henderson Creek where there is more activity. Photo submitted, & will be the last one. Beach was quite clean and probably because of the beach clean-up activities the previous Saturday.

We usually access the beach via an entry at Surfland which hasn't been easy in the past.
