Report Details

Fortunate to see neap tide and the wide expanse of the beach which was essentially clean except for the desiccated Velella velella which were everywhere. Very little shell fragments. Because not much to report on wildlife, etc., informal accesses to the beach were checked.

Conditions

Temperature: 58 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: -3.45 feet.

Activities

Types of Activities: Walking/Running.

Number of people: 9. Number of dogs: 3.

Other Activities: Like us, perhaps some were there to see the neap tide which was amazing. First time seeing this with the beach exposure very wide..

Notable Wildlife

Surprised not to see shorebirds. One recurring crow and heard some birds in the trees on the bluffs.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

Unusual concentration. thousands and thousands of desiccated Velella velella. The beach, excluding them, was relatively clean.

Wrackline Content

Wood pieces.

Man-made Modifications

Steps down bluff. Not surprising to see the new houses now have trails down to the beach. See photos.

Natural Changes

The erosion stage seems about the same.

Report Images

Looking north from the Surfland access to the beach.
i believe this stairway was built with a permit.
A new house south of South Shore Community with beach access
An unsafe stairway to beach at south end of South Shore Community
Suspect in time this unsafe stairway will be destroyed by large wood pieces hitting it in a storm

On a sunny day with strong wind from the north, there were more people on the beach than normally seen but this was during school vacation time. People mostly walking along the coast although there was one family enjoying a day at the beach with chairs/igloo tent and the 3 boys playing in the channel water.

This time I concentrated on the area south of Henderson Creek where there is more activity. Photo submitted, & will be the last one. Beach was quite clean and probably because of the beach clean-up activities the previous Saturday.
