Mile 21 Report
Pistol River SP south
July 22, 2024
Mile 21 looks about the same as it has for the past 10 years.
Report Details
Mile 21 looks about the same as it has for the past 10 years. This beach is out of the way and not heavily used by humans. It's a little relatively untouched piece of the Wild Rivers coast. I hope it stays that way forever!
Conditions
Temperature: 54 F. Cloud Cover: Partly Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Strong. Tide Level: -1.6 feet.
Human Activities
No ATV, OHV, or car tracks observed.
Notable Wildlife
The tide was very low, and I saw many healthy looking sea stars, in multiple colors (orange, purple, brownish) clustered in exposed rock crevices. No "gooey" (sick) sea stars were seen. I saw numerous black oyster-catchers and a pair of peregrine falcons. I saw grey fox tracks and digs, but not their maker.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 1. The carcass was mostly decomposed. It was probably a western, herring, or California gull.
Driftline Content
Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Wood pieces, Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.). One broken crab-pot float was retrieved.

The starfish we had seen dead and washed-up near pistol river / ocean coast line had disappeared --probably washed back into sea.
