One year into being a CoastWatcher for Mile 208 - Cecil still loves Cil (according to the carvings still legible in Graffiti Cove) and I still love Ona Beach! This was the lowest tide I've been there yet, which meant delightful tidepooling discoveries around the rocky concretions on the mid-south portion of the mile, including several Giant Green Anemones in their spiky vivid green phase and a few huge ones in their tubular stage hanging from the bottom of the rocks. I noticed major sand deposition compared to my prior visit in March; one of my favorite landmarks, "The Chasm," which can be seen clearly in prior reports, was almost entirely submerged in sand. Only a little bit of garbage, which seems to regularly be clustered toward the south end of the mile above the wrackline where there were also a few small fire pit remnants. There was a service dog harness left on a piece of driftwood, which I left there in case it belonged to one of the locals coming back for it. Cheers to more beautiful, misty, mysterious days on Mile 208 in the coming year!

Notable Wildlife
3 turkey vultures, hundreds of aggregating anemones in tidepools and at least 12 Giant Green Anemones around concretions

Small rocks, Seaweeds and seagrass, Shells, Animal casings or molts, Marine debris.
Natural Changes
Sand deposition. Major sand deposition noticed by the rocky concretions we call "The Chasm," which are normally exposed at low tide but were almost completely covered except for the very tips. Some fallen bluff clumps midmile but not as much as prior visits.

Due to a travel schedule glitch, I happened to visit at the highest tide I've seen on the mile so far. All along the wrackline were thousands of velella velella in clusters. Approaching the very southern end of the mile, I spotted bright pops of yellow by the stream and and my stomach sunk, thinking this must be garbage of some kind. Turning back north, I saw the beautifully strange landmarks starting to reveal themselves as the tide began to recede -- features we'd affectionately named "The Chasm" and "The Runway.

It was an unseasonably sunny and warm winter's visit - the first time we've had clear skies for the duration of our mile walk.

Another exciting day getting to know our mile. We are continually fascinated by the amount of anemones, barnacles, and other sea life concentrated around the largest of the rock formations. As we explore, we are trying to identify which spots we want to regularly photograph and are giving them names to help us remember!

This is Bedrock Theatre's first mile report as official CoastWatchers! It was a beautiful day with patches of blue sky peeking out between clouds. We're excited to continue getting to know this mile more intimately over the coming months and hopefully years!
