Ona Beach, south of Beaver Creek
June 22, 2025
This is Bedrock Theatre's first mile report as official CoastWatchers! It was a beautiful day with patches of blue sky peeking out between clouds. We're excited to continue getting to know this mile more intimately over the coming months and hopefully years!
Report Details
This is Bedrock Theatre's first mile report as official CoastWatchers! We have spent the past four months interviewing a group of CoastWatchers onsite at their adopted miles across the coast. These interviews will soon be featured in our audio production series "CoastWatch & Listen," produced in partnership with Oregon Shores. We were so inspired by these visits that we decided we wanted to adopt a mile of our own. It was a beautiful day with patches of blue sky peeking out between clouds. A layer of mist drifted through the air as the water evaporated off the sand, obscuring our view ahead and adding an extra layer of mystery and anticipation. We arrived shortly after high tide and took our time exploring. We read the last mile report from 2020 that mentioned ongoing extreme cliff erosion and houses at the top in jeopardy, so we spent the walk south near the bluff's edge, taking photos to start tracking this on our visits. We noted several long black drainage tubes running from the top of the bluff to the beach, as well as a few private staircases from the houses at the top of the bluff. There were a few burnt logs that looked leftover from fires. The beach wasn't overly littered, but we did find enough garbage to fill a small trash bag, mostly concentrated in the wrackline, and an unfortunate collection of bagged dog poop stuffed in a log. On our way back walking north, we enjoyed exploring Ona Beach's distinctive rock formations and got to see plenty of cool tidepool activity. Lots of anemones, mussels, and a large log covered in very active pelagic gooseneck barnacles - they were fascinating to watch! We're excited to continue getting to know this mile more intimately over the coming months and hopefully years! And excited to keep connecting with this amazing CoastWatch community.

Due to a travel schedule glitch, I happened to visit at the highest tide I've seen on the mile so far. All along the wrackline were thousands of velella velella in clusters. Approaching the very southern end of the mile, I spotted bright pops of yellow by the stream and and my stomach sunk, thinking this must be garbage of some kind. Turning back north, I saw the beautifully strange landmarks starting to reveal themselves as the tide began to recede -- features we'd affectionately named "The Chasm" and "The Runway.

It was an unseasonably sunny and warm winter's visit - the first time we've had clear skies for the duration of our mile walk.

Another exciting day getting to know our mile. We are continually fascinated by the amount of anemones, barnacles, and other sea life concentrated around the largest of the rock formations. As we explore, we are trying to identify which spots we want to regularly photograph and are giving them names to help us remember!
