Report Details

A little misty on this morning’s walk, but fairly warm (59 degrees). Tide was low and Patterson Creek was easy to cross. The wrack line was mainly green algae with some small rocks and crab pieces periodically mixed in. I saw a few joggers, a cyclist and walkers; around 12 people in all. The ranger buggy was cruising on the beach. There was a crab pot near the dunes and it looked like the ranger may be addressing this. Saw the usual gulls, crows and a turkey vulture. Near the houses and cottages on Big Stump beach, there were a few piles of vegetative debris that looked like someone dumped them. Also saw at least 5 fire pits and the one large fire ring (near the Inn at Sandcastle Beach) seems to be even larger than what I saw it on my last walk. The graffiti that had started to fade away on the sandstone cliffs is replenished with new doodling. There is also new graffiti on a sandstone cliff right near Patterson Creek with the words “RIP Kayla Chappell”. Various trash found – styrofoam, golf ball and plastic water bottle.

Conditions

Temperature: 59 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 0.0 feet.

Activities

Number of people: 12. Number of dogs: 4. Walking or running: 12.

I was anxious to visit Mile 200 this week to see if there were tar deposits or any struggling birds due to the reported tar substance washing up on Oregon beaches.
