Mile 188 Report
January 7, 2010
Lots of sand still on the beach north and south.
Lots of sand still on the beach north and south. Front of bluff on path to the north beach has fallen into path. Counted 55 seals. The graffiti being carved into our sandstone cliffs is a real problem for me. I have shared my concerns with people who are actively carving away. But haven't convinced anyone that nature is the better artist.
Temperature: 58 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 3.5 feet.
Number of people: 4. Walking or running: 1. Photography: 1. Tidepooling: 2.
Cars/trucks parking: 4.
Ocean-based debris (from fishing boats, ship trash, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Small rocks, Wood pieces. very little plastic/trash for the winter
Visible retreat of solid bluff. front of sandstone bluff along north path to beach sluffed off. Got rid of all the graffiti! Could this have been done on purpose?
Actions & Comments
The graffiti being carved into our sandstone cliffs is a real problem for me. I have shared my concerns with people who are actively carving away. But haven't convinced anyone that nature is the better artist. I have even asked the volunteer "patrol" if they can write up a ticket for people found carving up the bluffs. But they seemed to think that this activity didn't warrant a ticket. Isn't it illegal to deface public property? I can only hope that someone was carving away when the front sluffed off this bluff.
All Mile 188 Reports
The high surf (even at low tide) made for dramatic conditions during this visit.
Mile 188 has no notable changes since my last visit two months ago.
It was a beautiful day at Mile 188, with the resident harbor seals dozing on the rocks just offshore and many gulls flying around.
There were two mudslides on the north beach, 20-40 yards north of the parking area, that appeared to be recent.
Strawberry Hill is a popular destination for beachcombing and tidepooling.
