Mile 171 Report
Heceta Beach South, almost to North Jetty
June 6, 2009
Another pleasent walk on the beach today.
Report Details
Another pleasent walk on the beach today. The sand is definitely moving on-shore, with noticable accumulations above the high tide line. An outer sand bar, and fairly deep inner channel has formed this summer. The crows were actively digging out mole (sand) crabs along the water's edge. Amazing how they can quickly spot one, although I did manage to dig one out myself. SUMMARY

Notable Wildlife
Several groups of Steller sea lions moving south in the outer surf line towards the Siuslaw River entrance. Birds included two osprey, a turkey vulture (over the hummock dunes), and crows aggressively digging up mole (sand) crabs. The usual gaggle of gulls were in the area, too. Brown pelicans were feeding off-shore.
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Lots of Dungeness crab carapaces on the beach. Several Moon jellies washed up along the mile. Lots of mole crab parts everywhere, probably due to the crows keying on them for dinner.
Driftline Content
Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Shells.
