Report Details

We Are the shoreline group of the siuslaw middle school team team. Our goal is to find evidence of living and nonliving organisms in the wrack line of mile 161, like jellyfish, clams, starfish and birds. We also will be looking at the environment for dead sea weed, bones, unmoved rocks and berries to see if living and dead things are there. You also may be wondering what a wrack line is,it is the area on a beach where organic materials and other debris is Disposed at high tide. We brought with us binoculars, Coastwatch data sheet, and a Bucket for trash. We will be using binoculars to watch the coastline by using a data sheet to help us collect the data of the mile 161 coastline. We are also using buckets to see what we can find in the sand and other things like dirt, sand, and rock. And we were drawing a square in the sand to collect data in a small area instead of having to look at everything around us. In the end we found lots of evidence of living things along with non living on the wrack line of mile 161. We found birds and we found Sand dollars, Sea pickles, Dead crabs, Plastic Shells, Shrimp exoskeleton, Dead jellyfish, and European beach grass. We also found a deck/table that was washed up on the beach. We also found a lot of snowy plovers, as well as this dead bird that was in 2 parts. We also found a mysterious object on the beach that was green and had weird stuff in it. We don't know what is yet

What is life like on the Oregon coast beaches? Vellela vellela is a genus of hydrozoa (a group of little, predatory sea creatures) in the family Porpitidae. The Field trip on mile 161 we found amazing stuff from dead wildlife to stuff from Japan and China!

We walked along the wrack line of mile 161 and tallied the living and the non-living things we saw. We estimated how many of the big groups of living and non-living things are on the mile, tallied the living and non-living things we saw, and we took a few samples.

What evidence of living or non-living things is found in the wrack line of mile 161? We went to the lowest rackline first, then, while going back, explored the top rackline. Then we explored the river’s mouth and went back to the starting point in the middle. We went the other way until we got to the big yellow sign that said 109A. We did the same thing here, we went to the lowest rack line, then the highest wrack line on the way back. In conclusion, the beach has many living things on the shoreline, and you should be careful of things there. We found lots of shells and other things to put on our posters. I was pleasantly surprised to spot many juvenile plovers near the water's edge and further up the shore, sitting in scrapes. I was dismayed to find long expanses of dead jellies. As always, the osprey were feeding and then watching me from their perch on an old fallen tree.

I was happy to see less human encroachment this time into the protected, fenced-off areas designated for the endangered Snowy Plovers.
