Kelp/algae, shells, animal casings, small rocks, wood pieces, debris, plastic pellets and Styrofoam in driftline.
Report Details
Kelp/algae, shells, animal casings, small rocks, wood pieces, debris, plastic pellets and Styrofoam in driftline. Numerous molted crab carapaces. One dead 3-foot shark (probably a Salmon Shark). Two dead birds (probably Common Murre as they were white and black in color). Sea Gulls on the beach. 3-4 dozen small shorebirds on high beach near Snowy Plover nesting area, which may be Snowy Plovers. Sand removed from beach by large wave action creating a drop-off. Plastic wind break by Snowy Plover nesting area. Low human impact (0). ATV and truck tracks in prohibited area on beach.

Wind Velocity: Strong. Wind Direction: NW.
Human Activities
Vehicles are prohibited in this area but tracks of ATV's and a truck were seen.
Beached Birds
Total dead birds: 2. 2 Birds, white and black color
Dead Fish or Invertebrates
Unusual concentration. Shark- 3 feet long.Lots of crab shells from the recent molting.
Driftline Content
Seaweeds and seagrass, Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Animal casings (e.g., crab, shrimp molt), Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Shells, Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces. More litter than normal on previous walks. Normal for summer high seas, though.
Man-made Modifications
low tide line drop-off due to summer's large wave action?
Actions & Comments
Saw 3-4 dozen small shorebirds, not by the surf as usual, but close to the high tide areas by plover fencing. Possibly Snowy Plovers.

My patrol area is mile 140 for my USDA/APHIS job so I am coving this stretch of beach at least 3 times a week.

Beautiful, isolated section of the coastline where you can walk for miles without seeing another soul.

Recent storm had deposited numerous dead seabirds, crab and razor clam shells, and plastic and styrofoam debris (including fishing boat floats) and also brought in a significant amount of 'bullwhip' kelp.
