Report Details

More than the usual marine debris washed ashore by King Tides.

Conditions

Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Sunny. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 4.7 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 18. Walking or running: 18. Other Activities: This report covers Days 1 & 2 of the three-day beach clean-up organized by marinedebris911, United States Forest Service, Oregon Shores Conservation Coalition, and other volunteers. Each day about 18 people headed out to the remote Tenmile Estuary to remove marine debris deposited by the King Tides. More than a ton of mostly plastic detritus was collected, including a safe, signage, huge Styrofoam blocks, and 221 lighters. Just because they are called "disposable" lighters does not mean they should be left on our beaches. What a wonderful time we had picking up all manner of things destined for art, recycling, trash, and science. Thank you for organizing a complex mission to reduce horrible human cast-offs on a remote area of the Oregon coast. We had fun, worked hard, appreciated the efforts of committed young people, and felt immense satisfaction hauling out at least nine pick-up loads of plastics and other inorganic material from a pristine and seldom scene beach and estuary. Our work (play?) is especially important because this is the nesting ground for the adorable plovers. Thank you one and all to the partners that created this collaboration of like-minded folks. Go Plovers!. Great-hearted people volunteering for a good cause. If you want to have fun and feel rewarded, join us! Just don't take my place. I'll volunteer as long as my body will allow me. Best time ever!
