Report Details

A lone California Sea Lion was surprised by me as I made my way to the Northern most tip of the cove. I found another Mottled star...or was it the same one...The trail to the cove is still quite washed out. A cache of wood chips has been moving around the cove. I wonder how long it will take before they are gone. I saw a mossy chiton with white plates. Picked up a lot more trash than usual. Seemed like land debris. A couple of crab rulers, pieces of water bottle, toys, solo cup pieces, plastic utensils, amongst other plastics.

Conditions

Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2.6 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 15. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 12. Sitting: 15. Tidepooling: 3. Other Activities: An older couple brough chairs down to sit on the beach. Amazing, given the way the trail has washed out on the bottom.. It is always so fun to see people geeking out over all the sea life they find at South Cove.

Notable Wildlife

I surprised a California Sea Lion as I made my way to the point. Also saw a Mottled Star. I have found those here before, but not always. It is good to see the Ochre Stars have made such a recovery.

Driftline Content

There is always a great tangle of bull kelp high on the beach. The wood pieces are moving around in the cove. I wonder how long it will take before they are gone.

Natural Changes

The cove is eroding as always.

I visited the cove on my own time, and I was struck by the wrack content. I also investigated what I consider an "unsanctioned" trail, or a "surfer trail".

The day before, there was a much lower tide and I thought everyone must have come that day, because I was the only one at the start, but more people kept coming as the day wore on.

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
