Report Details

I visited the cove on my own time, and I was struck by the wrack content. I have uploaded pictures because I am sure words will not convey the massive amount of wood chips in play. I first noticed a large cache of wood chips in the rocks on the northern tidepools, close to the sand beach. You can see my picture of that in my 03.16.24 report. I also commented on it in my 06.01.25 reports. It was still astounding to see the massive amount of woodchips on display as eroded, yet persistent deposits, now moving southward in the cove. I also investigated what I consider an "unsanctioned" trail, or a "surfer trail".

Conditions

Temperature: 68 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: 2 feet.

Human Activities

I finally investigated the "surfer trail". I have seen surfers using this trail before for quite some time. TBH I wanted to come down that trail because the bottom of the "sanctioned" trail is so washed out, but I didn't know where the top of the trail was...until I came up it myself. It is not very visible, just to the North of the informational plaque placed by Parks. I believe in time, this "surfer trail" will show extreme erosion, but for right now, it's actually an easier way to access the cove.

The day before, there was a much lower tide and I thought everyone must have come that day, because I was the only one at the start, but more people kept coming as the day wore on.

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
