Report Details

A minus tide brought many visitors to South Cove, one group being led by Larry, a Oregon Shores board member. He seemed extremely knowledgeable about sea life and in the short time I spent with the group, he must have identified things. In addition to wind and rain, we can count young boys as contributing to the erosion of the cove. I found a Rose Ribbon Worm, a first for me. I saw/heard Pigeon Guillemots on an off shore rock.

Conditions

Temperature: 51 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Calm/Light. Tide Level: -1.88 feet.

Human Activities

Number of people: 30. Sitting: 25. Tidepooling: 28. Other Activities: Kids playing on cliff. A young boy was digging at the already prone to erosion cliffs. It's wonderful that people bring their kids though. Larry, a board member of Oregon Shores was leading a tidepool walk, and in the short time I spent with them, he must have identified 15 things. I got to see a lemon dorid they collected in a cup. Two people fished for a short time. One older gentleman waited on the sand while his children tide pooled.

Notable Wildlife

I encountered a Rose Ribbon Worm, a first for me. I saw a black leather chiton, many ochre stars, one blood star. I saw/heard Pigeon Guilimots on an off shore rock.

Dead Fish or Invertebrates

I saw two dead crabs. Made sure they hadn't just molted.

Driftline Content

Wood pieces. Apart from the driftwood, South Cove never has much of a wrack. I saw a great many tracks of things under the sand.

New Development

The ropes continue to be of great use in accessing the cove.

A Rose Ribbon Worm. When I first laid eyes on it, I thought it had opened it mouth, but I learned they have a marking that looks much like a mouth, though it doesn't show in any of my media.
A very healthy looking black leather chiton, so named on the tidepool illustration board, otherwise known as Black Katy Chiton

Two separate study groups were present, one measuring Gumboot Chitons and the surrounding algae and one studying sea urchins, ones living in pits versus ones not. I saw a couple families bringing their small children to South Cove, and a flock of pelicans.

There was a beach hazard statement issued and I wanted to see what impact that would have as we were experiencing the first fine weather after so many weeks of cold rain. I was charmed by a family of six playing on the beach, the children even playing in the water.
