Mile 8 - Harris Beach SP picnic area, Goat Island - December 20, 2010

Report Details

A stormy day with just a few storm watchers and relatively little other activity. Lots of driftwood movement in recent storms. Access ramp from parking lot has much improved a hazardous access path, but is somewhat unsightly from the beach (see photo). Lots of bits of plastic in driftline.

Temperature: 45 F. Cloud Cover: Cloudy. Wind Velocity: Storm. Wind Direction: S. Tide Level: -1.0 feet.

Number of people: 13. Number of dogs: 1. Walking or running: 5. Playing in sand: 2. Sitting: 6. The "sitters" were in their cars, watching the storm waves.

Notable Wildlife

California gulls, 3 oystercatchers

Driftline Content

Seaweeds and seagrass, Land-based debris (picnics, etc.), Marine debris (plastic, styrofoam, etc. washing in from the sea), Small rocks, Styrofoam, Wood pieces.

Man-made Modifications

New riprap or shoreline protection structures. Riprap to protect access ramp (see picture). Area is protected by outcropping on north side and should see little tidal action. "New" means since last report for this mile, probably about 8 months ago.

Natural Changes

Newly exposed roots/trees falling.

Found today 10-12’ decomposing body of a sea lion washed up on the rocks at the cove at the most northern point of mile 8 appears to have been dead for some time and is very fragrant Turkey vulture activity has been high here for the last several days and I guess I discovered why!
